Chapter 14 - THE LIFE CLAIRE BUILT ALONE

By spring, Claire had moved into a small house near Lake Michigan.
It wasn't a mansion.
There were no marble floors.
No armed guards.
No enormous chandeliers.
But there was sunlight.
A garden.
And a nursery filled with soft colors.
Hope had begun laughing.
Evelyn visited often.
Rebecca helped Claire finalize the divorce and establish a stable parenting arrangement.
Alexander continued attending supervised visits.
He was learning.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Without expecting forgiveness.
Claire began working part-time with a community organization supporting women rebuilding their lives.
She discovered she was good at it.
Not because she'd suffered.
But because she understood how important it was for someone to believe you could begin again.
One afternoon, she stood in her garden holding Hope.
The baby reached toward a butterfly.
Claire laughed.
“Not yet, sweetheart.”
Hope giggled.

Claire kissed her cheek.
And for the first time in years, she felt free.
