Chapter 2 - THE ALLEY THAT HAD NO EXIT

Alexander picked up the bracelet.
His hands were shaking.
“Where did you get this?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“From the hospital.”
He stared.
“Which hospital?”
She shook her head.
“Not yet.”
Alexander's expression darkened.
“Don't play games with me.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
Her voice remained calm.
“Your wife was in labor when she left your house.”
He swallowed.
“She should have called me.”
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“Why?”
Alexander froze.
She continued.
“So you could tell her she was perfectly safe while you went back to your mistress?”
Silence.
Alexander looked down.
Evelyn's expression softened slightly.
“She was terrified.”
His jaw tightened.
“Was she hurt?”
Evelyn hesitated.
Then answered:
“She survived.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
Relief nearly brought him to his knees.
Then he whispered:
“And the baby?”
Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.
Then said:
“Alive.”
Alexander exhaled shakily.
He gripped the edge of the table.
“Where are they?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Claire doesn't want you to know.”
His expression changed.
“She's my wife.”
Evelyn stared.
“And you treated her like she was furniture.”
May you like
Alexander flinched.
For the first time in years, he had no answer.
