Alexander discovered the truth about Evelyn Hart through an old file.
Claire's mother hadn't died.
She had disappeared after testifying against a criminal organization connected to Alexander's father.
The testimony had placed her in danger.
A protection arrangement had separated her from Claire.

Alexander stared at the documents.
Then looked toward Marco, his head of security.
“My father?”
Marco nodded.
“Yes.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
He had inherited an empire.
A mansion.
Power.
And enemies.
But he had never understood how deeply his family's violence had damaged other people.
Including Claire.
He looked toward the empty nursery.
The crib.
The folded blankets.
The tiny clothes.
Then whispered:
“What have I done?”
