Chapter 6 - THE FATHER WHO HAD TO EARN FORGIVENESS

Vincent removed the hidden cameras from Matteo's bedroom and bathroom.

He retained disclosed security cameras in public areas and around the estate's perimeter.

Then he sat beside his son.

Matteo was drawing a picture of a spaceship.

Vincent took a breath.

“Buddy, I need to tell you something.”

Matteo looked up.

“What?”

Vincent hesitated.

Then told him.

About the cameras.

About watching him.

About believing it was necessary for safety.

Matteo stared.

“You watched me cry?”

Vincent's chest tightened.

“Yes.”

Matteo looked down.

“Even when I wanted to be alone?”

Vincent nodded.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Matteo whispered:

“That's not fair.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

“No.”

Matteo looked at him.

“Are you going to do it again?”

Vincent shook his head.

“Not without telling you and discussing what is needed to keep you safe.”

Matteo studied him.

Then asked:

“Can Clara come back?”

Vincent swallowed.

“I hope so.”

Matteo looked toward the blue wooden star.

“I miss her.”

Vincent nodded.

“So do I.”

That evening, Vincent called Clara.

She answered after several rings.

“Mr. Rossi?”

“I removed the cameras.”

Silence.

“And I told Matteo.”

Clara exhaled.

“Good.”

Vincent continued.

“You were right.”

She said nothing.

“I confused watching him with protecting him.”

His voice softened.

“And I confused control with love.”

Clara was quiet for a long moment.

Then asked:

“How did Matteo take it?”

Vincent looked toward the hallway.

“He was angry.”

Clara nodded.

“He has a right to be.”

“I know.”

A pause.

Then Vincent asked:

“Will you come back?”

Clara was silent.

Finally, she said:

“For Matteo.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

“Thank you.”

Clara continued.

“But things have to change.”

May you like

He nodded.

“They will.”
