Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Ambush of Julian Vance

================================================================================

At 8:30 AM, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was filled with two hundred prominent Chicago business leaders, city council members, and journalists for the annual Midwest Logistics Summit.

Julian Vance—forty-five years old, impeccably groomed in a five-thousand-dollar tailored tuxedo, the heir to Vance International Logistics—stood at the podium addressing the audience.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian smiled broadly, raising a glass of champagne. “Today marks the dawn of a new era for Chicago commerce. With the unfortunate and sudden medical absence of our chief competitor, Vance Logistics is officially submitting our exclusive bid for the five-hundred-million-dollar Lake Michigan port expansion.”

The audience began to applaud.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open with a resounding bang.

The room went dead silent.

Walking down the center aisle with absolute, uncontested authority was Vincent Hale.

He was dressed in a pristine charcoal three-piece suit, looking completely healthy, powerful, and majestic.

Walking beside him, wearing a stunning, elegant emerald-green silk dress that complemented her curves with breathtaking grace, was Molly Harper. Her injured wrist was wrapped in a neat, stylish silk bandage.

Julian’s champagne glass slipped from his trembling hand, shattering violently against the wooden podium.

“Vincent...?” Julian stammered, the color draining from his face until he looked like wet chalk. “That’s... that’s impossible!”

Vincent strode up the carpeted stage, stopping three feet from the podium.

“You look surprised to see me, Julian,” Vincent said, his voice carrying clearly through the room’s microphones. “Were you expecting me to die of heart failure at dinner last night?”

Julian backed away, waving his hands frantically at hotel security. “Security! Remove this man! He is trespassing on a private corporate event!”

Grant Mercer and four federal marshals stepped onto the stage, flashing gold badges and an unsealed federal indictment.
