Chapter 6 - The Warehouse on Calumet River

================================================================================

At 2:15 AM, the storm over Chicago reached its peak. Thunder rolled across the industrial expanse of South Chicago, shaking the metal siding of the Calumet Chemical Warehouse.

Inside the second-floor security office, four men in dark tactical jackets were drinking beer and watching live surveillance feeds.

“The Drake gala should be wrapping up,” one gunman muttered, checking his watch. “Why hasn’t Julian called to confirm Hale’s death?”

“Relax,” the lead mercenary scoffed. “Bell wouldn’t dare mess it up. If he didn’t serve the sauce, his kid was dead. Either way, we get our two million tomorrow morning.”

Down in the concrete basement, seven-year-old Toby Bell sat shivering on a metal cot, wrapped in a thin blanket, clutching a small plastic dinosaur to his chest as tears silently tracked down his pale cheeks.

Suddenly, a faint, sweet-smelling white mist began drifting through the ceiling ventilation grates on the second floor.

Within forty-five seconds, the lead mercenary’s eyelids turned heavy. “What... what is that smell...?”

His beer bottle slipped from his numb fingers, shattering against the linoleum. He collapsed forward onto the desk.

The other three men tried to stand, reaching for their holstered sidearms, but their knees buckled instantly as the anesthetic overwhelmed their nervous systems.

Crash. Thud.

All four men collapsed into deep, unresponsive unconsciousness on the floor.

Outside on the rooftop, Grant Mercer gave the hand signal to the tactical entry squad.

“Ventilation clear,” Grant spoke into his radio. “Breaching now.”
