Chapter 7 - The Breach at 3:00 AM

The heavy iron basement door was breached with a silent pneumatic spreader.
Vincent Hale strode down the concrete stairs, accompanied by Grant and two armed operatives.
In the corner of the boiler room, little Toby looked up, gasping in terror and scrambling backward against the brick wall.
Vincent stopped five paces away. He slowly knelt down on the cold concrete floor, lowering his head until he was at eye level with the trembling child.
He unbuttoned his heavy dark overcoat, took the small plastic dinosaur that had fallen from the cot, and held it out gently in his palm.
“Toby?” Vincent asked, his voice unexpectedly warm and gentle.
The boy sniffled, nodding slowly. “Are you the bad guys?”
“No, Toby,” Vincent smiled softly, wrapping the heavy coat around the shivering boy’s shoulders. “Your dad sent me. You’re going home.”
Toby let out a broken sob and threw his small arms around Vincent’s neck. Vincent lifted the boy effortlessly into his arms, carrying him up the stairs into the clean night air.
Waiting beside the armored SUV in the rain was Molly.
When Toby saw Molly in her server’s uniform, his tear-stained face relaxed. Molly pulled a warm thermos of hot chocolate from the vehicle and handed it to the boy, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead.
“You’re safe now, Toby,” Molly whispered. “Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
Grant walked out of the warehouse carrying the mercenaries’ encrypted satellite phones and laptop drives.
“Boss,” Grant reported, holding up a ringing phone. “It’s Julian Vance calling the lead kidnapper.”
Vincent took the phone, pressed answer, and held the receiver to his ear.
“Is it done?” Julian Vance’s arrogant voice demanded through the line. “Is Hale dead and the boy disposed of?”
Vincent took a slow, deep breath of the rain-cooled air.
“The boy is drinking hot chocolate, Julian,” Vincent said in a calm, lethal voice. “And I am coming for your head.”
May you like
The line went dead silent. You could hear Julian’s sudden, terrified gasp across the connection before Vincent crushed the phone in his bare hand.
