Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Justice

Four months later, the main courtroom of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York was packed to capacity for the sentencing of Raymond and Julian Sterling.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Daniel and me. Daniel was dressed in a handsome little navy blazer, healthy, smiling, and holding my hand. Sitting beside us was Elena Cruz, dressed in an elegant ivory suit, her face completely healed, looking radiant and confident.

Chief Judge Evelyn Sterling (no relation to the defendants) looked down from the bench with stern, righteous severity.

“In the matter of the United States versus Raymond Sterling and Julian Sterling,” Judge Sterling began, her voice echoing through the silent chamber. “The court has reviewed the overwhelming evidence of calculated, depraved familial betrayal, chemical endangerment, and attempted first-degree murder of an innocent six-year-old child.”

Judge Sterling brought her heavy wooden gavel down with a resounding crack.

“On all counts of Attempted Capital Murder, Conspiracy, and Federal Fraud, Raymond Sterling is hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole at the United States Penitentiary, Florence High.”

Raymond collapsed into his chair, weeping bitterly.

“Julian Sterling, for your direct coordination of the chemical assault and armed hospital breach, you are sentenced to forty-five years in federal penitentiary, followed by complete financial forfeiture of all assets totaling $65 million.”

Julian was led out in heavy steel transport chains, unable to lift his eyes from the floor.

Judge Sterling then turned her gaze toward the gallery, looking directly at Elena Cruz.

“The court also wishes to enter into the permanent record a special commendation for Miss Elena Cruz. Your extraordinary courage, selfless heroism, and unyielding protection of a vulnerable child in the face of mortal danger represents the highest ideal of American citizenship.”

The entire courtroom—prosecutors, marshals, spectators, and press—rose in a thunderous standing ovation.

Elena blushed, a tear of joy slipping down her cheek as Daniel threw his arms around her waist, hugging her tight.

“You’re my hero, Elena,” Daniel cheered.
