Chapter 8 - The Confession Under Steel

By 5:00 AM, the storm had finally passed, leaving the Manhattan skyline glistening under a cool, pink dawn.

Inside Interrogation Room B at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building, Julian Sterling sat pinned between two armed federal marshals. His tuxedo was torn, his hair disheveled, his arrogance completely destroyed.

I sat opposite him, placing my sidearm on the table with a slow, deliberate metallic click.

“You have three minutes to tell me everything about the HVAC tampering at my home, Julian,” I said, my voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute lethal authority. “Or I hand this case over to military intelligence under Title 50 National Security Directives for state-sponsored domestic terrorism.”

Julian began to weep hysterically, tears and mucus dripping onto his silk lapels.

“It was Raymond’s idea!” Julian blubbered, throwing his hands in the air. “I swear to God, Gabriel! The creditors in Macau were going to cut our throats! Raymond paid a private HVAC technician ten thousand dollars to spray a concentrated histamine allergen into your central ventilation while you were away! We knew Daniel’s asthma would flare up... we knew he would be taken to Lenox Hill!”

“And the hitmen in the pediatric room?” Elena asked from beside the door, her arms crossed.

“They were contracted through a private security firm in New Jersey!” Julian cried out. “They were supposed to make it look like sudden pediatric arrhythmia! We never thought a cleaning girl would fight back! We thought it was clean!”

“There is nothing clean about you, Julian,” I said, rising from the chair.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Vance turned off the recording deck. “That constitutes a full, voluntary confession of Premeditated Attempted Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Capital Felonies, and Domestic Chemical Terrorism.”

As the marshals hauled Julian toward the holding cells, he looked at Elena with hollow, defeated eyes.

“You ruined everything...” Julian whispered.

“No, Julian,” Elena replied with pristine dignity. “You destroyed yourself the moment you thought money gave you the right to extinguish an innocent life.”
