Chapter 5 - The Extraction to Fort Hamilton

Before launching the offensive against the Sterling syndicate, Daniel’s safety had to be made absolute.

At 2:30 AM, under the cover of the relentless thunderstorm, a heavily armored military convoy consisting of two bulletproof Chevy Suburbans and an escort of unmarked tactical interceptors pulled up to the subterranean ambulance bay of Lenox Hill.

Elena carried Daniel, who was now awake and resting comfortably, wrapped in a warm blanket. His small hand was tucked securely into Elena’s fingers; the boy had refused to let go of her hand since waking up.

“Daddy,” Daniel whispered sleepily, looking up as I opened the armored door of the Suburban. “Elena saved me from the bad men.”

I knelt down, kissing his forehead with a tenderness I rarely showed the outside world. “Yes, she did, Daniel. Elena is our guardian angel. And right now, we are going to a place where no bad man will ever reach you.”

We transported Daniel and Elena to the secure command bunker at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn—a United States military garrison protected by multi-layered biometric checkpoints and heavily armed perimeter defenses.

Margaret, our faithful nanny, was waiting in the executive officer’s quarters with warm food, clean clothes, and Daniel’s favorite plush bear.

Daniel hugged Elena’s neck tightly before being tucked into bed. “Will you stay with me, Elena?”

Elena smiled, kissing his cheek gently. “I’ll be right outside your door, Daniel. I promise.”

Leaving Sergeant Miller and six elite military police operators to guard the quarters, I turned to Elena in the command hallway.

“We strike the Metropolitan Club in forty-five minutes,” I told her. “Julian believes he is untouchable among his wealthy peers. We are going to show him what accountability looks like.”

Elena zipped up a clean tactical jacket provided by the base armory. “Let’s finish this, Colonel.”
