Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Metropolitan Club on 60th Street was a monument to aristocratic arrogance.

Crystal chandeliers hung from gilded ceilings, casting warm golden light over three hundred high-society investors, maritime executives, and politicians who were clinking champagne glasses.

At the center of the VIP terrace stood thirty-four-year-old Julian Sterling. Dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon, Julian was laughing loudly with his corporate allies.

“To new beginnings!” Julian toasted arrogantly. “By tomorrow morning, the Sterling Maritime legacy enters an era of unprecedented growth and modern leadership!”

“And to your late cousin’s son?” an elderly investor asked politely. “We heard the poor boy was hospitalized tonight.”

Julian put on a dramatic, sorrowful expression, sighing with practiced deceit. “Tragic... truly tragic. Congenital respiratory weakness, just like his mother. The doctors say it’s only a matter of hours. We are preparing the memorial foundation in his honor.”

“You won't be attending any memorials, Julian,” a voice of cold steel echoed from the ballroom entrance.

The grand oak double doors slammed back against the stone walls.

Every head in the ballroom turned in stunned silence.

I walked down the central red carpet, dressed in my crisp Army Service Uniform, the four rows of combat decorations and silver parachutist badge gleaming under the chandeliers.

Beside me walked Elena Cruz, her head held high, the bandage on her brow a stark badge of honor against the sea of silk and diamonds. Flanking us were twelve uniformed federal marshals and tactical investigators from the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. His champagne glass slipped from his numb fingers, shattering across the parquet floor.

“Gabriel...?” Julian stammered, backing toward the stage. “What... what is the meaning of this military circus? This is a private club!”

“This is an active federal crime scene, Mr. Sterling,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Vance announced, stepping forward with an active arrest warrant.

Julian’s eyes darted frantically, spotting Elena. A sneer of venomous panic twisted his lips. “You! You’re that filthy little hospital maid! Security! Throw this gutter trash out of the building!”

Not a single security guard moved. The club’s private guards had already been disarmed and replaced by federal agents at every exit.

Elena stepped forward, looking directly into Julian’s terrified eyes.

“I may be a maid, Julian,” Elena said, her voice echoing clearly across three hundred elite guests. “But I am the woman who shattered your hitman’s jaw with a mop handle when he tried to poison an innocent six-year-old child in Room 412.”

A collective, horrified gasp rippled across the room.
