Chapter 10 - Sunlight on the Hudson.

One year after that unforgettable night at the gala, the golden summer sun bathed the private penthouse terrace of Carter Tower overlooking the Hudson River.

The cool river breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming white hydrangeas, fresh strawberries, and the joyful melodies of a live acoustic string quartet. Over one hundred guests—pediatric doctors, nurses, my brother Lucas, and true, lifelong friends—had gathered for our engagement celebration.

Under my leadership as Executive Director, we had officially established the Ava Bennett Foundation for Pediatric Heart Recovery & Victim Protection, providing over $50 million in free surgical grants and emergency legal aid for vulnerable women across the country.

I stood by the glass balustrade in a flowing ivory silk sundress, holding a glass of sparkling peach cider.

Ethan walked over from the library steps, looking magnificent in a tailored navy blazer and white linen shirt. He wrapped a strong, loving arm around my waist, pulling me close against his chest and kissing the side of my forehead.

"What are you thinking about, my brilliant Director?" Ethan asked softly, his slate-grey eyes glowing with boundless love.

I leaned back against his broad chest, feeling his steady, powerful heartbeat against my shoulder.

"I was thinking about that night in the dressing room," I smiled, looking out at the glittering blue water. "When you opened that door and saw those bruises, I thought my life was over."

Ethan smiled from the depths of his soul, turning me in his arms and looking down into my eyes with infinite tenderness.

"It was the end of your pain, Ava," Ethan whispered, pulling a velvet box from his pocket and revealing a breathtaking, five-carat cushion-cut blue diamond ring. "And the beginning of our forever."

He slid the diamond onto my finger, pulling me down into a tender, passionate kiss as our guests erupted into joyful applause beneath the endless golden sunshine.

The bruises, the dark dressing rooms, the cruel lies, and the shadows of fear were gone forever. Standing tall in the light of truth, surrounded by honor, prosperity, and unconditional love, we were finally whole—a family that would stand strong, bright, and unbreakable for all the years to come.
