Chapter 8 - The Blue Scarf and the Confession

Ethan reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a delicate, soft silk object.

It was my royal-blue scarf—the one I had accidentally left on his armchair five months earlier.

He held it gently in his hands, smoothing down the edges.

"For eleven months, Ava," Ethan said, his voice trembling with quiet vulnerability, "I watched you walk into this office every morning. I saw your brilliance, your kindness, your unwavering grace under pressure. And every single day, I reminded myself that you were engaged to another man."

He looked into my eyes, placing the scarf over my shoulders like a protective mantle.

"When I saw those bruises tonight... my soul burned. I realized that respecting a lie was the greatest mistake of my life. I will never let anyone hurt you again, Ava. Not as long as I have breath in my body."

I looked at the man who had stood between me and the world, my heart overflowing with love that had waited in the shadows for nearly a year.

"I loved you from the third week, Ethan," I whispered, stepping closer to him. "I stayed engaged to Adrian because I thought keeping him happy would keep my brother safe. But every time I looked at you, I knew what true honor looked like."

Ethan pulled me into his arms, holding me tight against his chest with gentle, fierce devotion, resting his chin against my hair as we stood together above the city.
