Chapter 4 - The Stage Under the Chandelier

At 7:45 PM, the Grand Ballroom of Carter Tower was an ocean of black tuxedos, designer gowns, and flashing media cameras.

Five hundred of the most powerful politicians, philanthropists, and corporate executives in the Northeast sat around fifty banquet tables beneath the glow of massive Austrian crystal chandeliers.

In the center front-row table sat thirty-five-year-old Dr. Adrian Vaughn, wearing a bespoke Brioni tuxedo, smiling with charming, arrogant entitlement. He held a glass of vintage champagne, laughing with Senator Collins.

"Dr. Vaughn," a television reporter approached with a microphone. "How does it feel to be named the Carter Foundation's Surgeon of the Decade tonight?"

"It is an immense privilege," Adrian replied smoothly, smiling for the cameras with practiced modesty. "Healing innocent children is my life’s sacred calling. And tonight, I am especially blessed to dedicate this honor to my beautiful fiancée, Ava Bennett, who has been my rock through every trial."

Backstage behind the velvet curtain, Ethan Carter stood adjusting his black cuffs.

Beside him stood myself, dressed in an immaculate, high-necked emerald silk evening gown that concealed the bandages on my arms, my hair styled into an elegant chignon.

Ethan looked down at me, taking my cold hand into his warm, steady palm.

"Are you ready, Ava?" Ethan asked softly.

May you like

I looked through the curtain at Adrian, feeling the terror that had suffocated me for six months burn away into pure, unshakeable strength.

"I’m ready, Ethan," I replied.
