Chapter 8 - THE BABY WHO CHANGED THE RULES

Isabella's pregnancy continued under close medical supervision.
The irregular rhythm was monitored.
Additional tests were performed.
Her doctors explained the possible causes and discussed the plan for delivery.
Some appointments brought reassurance.
Others brought uncertainty.
But Isabella was no longer navigating them alone.
Evelyn attended when Isabella asked.
Her medical team answered her questions.
And Dante, when invited, learned to listen.
The first appointment he attended after their separation was awkward.
He arrived early.
Wore a simple dark sweater instead of a suit.
And sat quietly in the waiting room.
Isabella looked at him.
"You don't have to pretend to be ordinary."
He smiled faintly.
"I'm not sure how."
She almost laughed.
Almost.
During the ultrasound, Dante watched the screen.
Their daughter moved.
A tiny hand lifted.
He stared.
The technician pointed out the baby's profile.
Dante's eyes filled.
Isabella noticed.
She looked away.
For a moment, she remembered the man who used to rest his hand on her stomach and whisper goodnight to their unborn child.
The man she had loved.
The man she still loved.
But love alone was not enough.
After the appointment, they walked outside.
Dante stopped beside her car.
"How are you feeling?"
"Tired."
He nodded.
"Do you need anything?"
"No."
He hesitated.
"Bella."
She looked up.
"I've started seeing a therapist."
She blinked.
Dante continued.
"I realized I don't know how to have a difficult conversation without trying to control it."
Isabella stared.
He looked uncomfortable.
"I've spent most of my life treating emotions like weaknesses."
She said nothing.
He continued.
"I don't want our daughter to learn that from me."
Isabella felt tears gathering.
"That's good, Dante."
He nodded.
Then stepped back.
"I won't ask you to come home."
She looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because you left for a reason."
The words hurt.
But they also gave her something she had not felt in months.
Respect.
That night, Isabella wrote in a journal.
I don't know if our marriage can be repaired.
May you like
But today he listened.
And for the first time in a long time, I didn't feel invisible.
