Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED WAITING

Isabella spent the night in Evelyn's guest room.

The house was small, warm, and smelled faintly of lavender.

There were no security guards.

No marble floors.

No staff waiting for instructions.

For the first time in months, Isabella could breathe.

Evelyn brought her tea.

"How are you feeling?"

"Tired."

"Any pain?"

"No."

"Bleeding?"

"No."

"Any change in the baby's movements?"

Isabella shook her head.

"She's moving."

Evelyn smiled.

"Good."

They sat quietly.

Then Isabella began crying.

Not because she wanted Dante back.

Not because she regretted leaving.

But because she had finally stopped pretending everything was fine.

"I loved him," she whispered.

Evelyn looked at her.

"You still do."

Isabella nodded.

"That's the worst part."

Evelyn took her hand.

"Love doesn't mean you have to accept being hurt."

Isabella looked down.

"I kept thinking if I became thinner, quieter, more elegant, maybe they'd stop treating me like an embarrassment."

Evelyn's expression softened.

"Who told you that?"

"Nobody directly."

"That doesn't mean nobody told you."

Isabella smiled sadly.

The next morning, they went to the hospital.

Isabella underwent additional fetal monitoring and a detailed ultrasound.

The specialist explained that the irregular rhythm required observation and further evaluation.

There was no immediate evidence of severe distress.

But the pregnancy would need closer follow-up.

Isabella listened carefully.

Asked questions.

Took notes.

She had worked as a nurse before marrying Dante.

Medical uncertainty frightened her, but she understood the importance of accurate information.

After the appointment, she checked her phone.

Seventeen missed calls.

Twelve messages.

All from Dante.

She read the most recent.

I found something about the Harrington agreement. I need to explain.

Isabella stared.

Then typed:

I'm not ready to talk. Please respect that.

His reply came almost immediately.

I will. Tell me if you need anything.

She put the phone away.

For the first time, Dante had accepted a boundary without arguing.

It was a beginning.

But it was not forgiveness.

That afternoon, Isabella received a call from an unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice spoke.

"Mrs. Vale?"

"Yes?"

"My name is Margaret Ellis. I worked for your husband's father."

Isabella frowned.

"Why are you calling me?"

Margaret hesitated.

"Because I saw what happened at the gala."

Isabella closed her eyes.

"Please don't call to discuss my marriage."

"I'm not."

A pause.

"I'm calling because Celeste Harrington has been planning this for months."

Isabella's stomach tightened.

"What?"

May you like

Margaret lowered her voice.

"And because your baby's medical records are not the only thing they've been trying to obtain."
