Chapter 2 - THE AGREEMENT BURIED IN HIS FATHER'S DESK

Dante had inherited his father's empire at twenty-nine.

He had inherited the warehouses, the private clubs, the shipping contracts, and the enemies.

He had also inherited a collection of sealed agreements that his father insisted were necessary for the family's survival.

Most concerned business partnerships.

Some involved property.

Others were written in language so vague that even experienced attorneys struggled to understand their purpose.

The Harrington agreement had always seemed straightforward.

Two powerful families would cooperate on port development.

The Vales would provide capital and distribution networks.

The Harringtons would provide access to waterfront property and political connections.

But Samuel had discovered an earlier version.

And that version contained something Dante had never seen.

At midnight, Samuel arrived at the mansion carrying a leather briefcase.

Dante met him in the library.

"Show me."

Samuel placed the document on the desk.

The paper was old.

The signatures genuine.

Dante recognized his father's handwriting immediately.

Richard Vale had signed the agreement seventeen years earlier.

At the time, Dante was twenty.

Celeste Harrington was sixteen.

The document outlined a proposed marriage alliance between the families.

Dante felt sick.

"My father never told me."

Samuel nodded.

"The later commercial agreement replaced much of this."

"Then why does it matter?"

"Because the inheritance provision was never formally revoked."

Dante read.

The language was complicated, but the intention was clear.

If Dante married outside the Harrington family and produced an heir, certain assets could be transferred into a trust controlled jointly by the Vale and Harrington families.

The arrangement was designed to prevent the Vale fortune from passing entirely outside the old alliance.

Dante looked up.

"Can they enforce this?"

Samuel hesitated.

"Possibly not. There are serious legal problems with the clause. But they can create expensive litigation."

Dante leaned back.

"And they know Isabella is pregnant."

"Yes."

The room fell silent.

Dante thought about Celeste's behavior.

The insults.

The public humiliation.

The necklace.

The announcement that she would stand beside him by spring.

It had not been ordinary jealousy.

She had been trying to drive Isabella away.

And her father had given her a reason.

Samuel continued.

"There's another issue."

Dante looked up.

"The Harringtons have been buying interests in companies connected to your father's estate."

"How many?"

"Enough to influence several boards."

Dante's jaw tightened.

"Without telling me?"

"Through intermediaries."

He stood.

"Find every company."

Samuel nodded.

"And Dante?"

"What?"

"Your wife may be safer away from the mansion until we understand what's happening."

Dante stared.

"Why?"

Samuel placed a second document on the desk.

A medical authorization form.

Isabella's name appeared at the top.

Dante frowned.

"What is this?"

"A request for access to her pregnancy records."

"Who filed it?"

Samuel pointed.

HARRINGTON FAMILY TRUST.

Dante felt the blood drain from his face.

Someone had been trying to obtain information about his unborn child.

And he had been too busy negotiating contracts to notice.
