Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT THE BABY CAME EARLY

At thirty-four weeks, Isabella developed symptoms that required urgent medical evaluation.
She called Evelyn first.
Then Dante.
He answered immediately.
"Bella?"
"I'm at the hospital."
His heart stopped.
"What happened?"
"The doctors are monitoring me and the baby."
"I'm coming."
Dante arrived twenty minutes later.
Isabella lay in a hospital bed.
Monitors surrounded her.
A nurse adjusted the equipment.
Dante approached carefully.
"How are you?"
She looked exhausted.
"Scared."
He took her hand.
"I'm here."
She squeezed his fingers.
The medical team explained that they were monitoring concerns related to the pregnancy and evaluating whether early delivery might be necessary.
Dante listened.
Asked questions when invited.
And deferred to Isabella's decisions.
Hours passed.
The situation remained uncertain.
Then the obstetrician returned.
"We believe delivery is the safest option."
Isabella closed her eyes.
Dante felt fear rise through him.
But he did not turn it into anger.
He looked at his wife.
"What do you need?"
She stared.
Then whispered:
"Stay."
He nodded.
"I'm not going anywhere."
Their daughter was born before dawn.
Small.
Beautiful.
Crying.
The medical team assessed her immediately and arranged appropriate neonatal care.
Dante watched with his heart in his throat.
Isabella was exhausted.
Tears ran down her cheeks.
"Is she okay?"
The doctor explained that the baby was receiving monitoring and support.
Dante held Isabella's hand.
"We'll take this one moment at a time."
Later, they were allowed to see their daughter.
She lay beneath warm lights.
Tiny fingers curled.
Dante stood beside Isabella.
Neither spoke for a long time.
Then Isabella whispered:
"Her name is Grace."
Dante looked at her.
"Grace?"
She nodded.
"Grace Vale."
He smiled through tears.
"It's perfect."
That night, Dante sat beside his daughter's bedside.
He looked at her tiny face.
Then whispered:
"I almost lost everything because I thought being strong meant never admitting I was wrong."
Grace slept.
Dante continued.
"But I'm going to learn."
He reached toward the incubator.
Touched her tiny hand when the nurse showed him how.
And made a promise.
Not that he would control every danger.
Not that he could guarantee a perfect life.
But that he would be present.
May you like
Honest.
And worthy of the people he loved.
