Chapter 14 - THE EMERALD RETURNED

A year after the gala, Dante invited Isabella to the family estate.

She hesitated.

The mansion held painful memories.

But he promised there would be no guests.

No surprises.

No public speeches.

Just the two of them.

They arrived on a quiet autumn afternoon.

The ballroom was empty.

The chandeliers were dimmed.

The staircase stood silent.

Isabella looked around.

"I haven't been here since that night."

Dante nodded.

"I know."

He led her into the library.

On the desk sat a small velvet box.

Isabella stared.

"What is that?"

Dante opened it.

Inside lay his mother's emerald pendant.

The clasp had been repaired.

The hidden compartment was gone.

The necklace had been cleaned and restored.

Dante looked at Isabella.

"My mother wore this on the day she married my father."

Isabella touched the velvet.

"Celeste wore it when she humiliated me."

"I know."

He swallowed.

"I can't erase that memory."

She looked at him.

He continued.

"But I wanted you to know that it was never hers."

Isabella stared at the emerald.

Dante closed the box.

"And I don't expect you to wear it."

She looked up.

"Then why show me?"

"Because I want to give you the choice."

The words surprised her.

Isabella opened the box again.

She studied the necklace.

Then smiled faintly.

"Your mother was kind to me."

Dante nodded.

"She loved you."

"I know."

Isabella touched the pendant.

"Maybe one day I'll wear it."

Dante smiled.

"Whenever you want."

They walked into the ballroom.

Isabella stopped near the front doors.

The place where she had stood with her suitcase.

Dante approached.

"Do you remember what you said?"

She nodded.

"'She wins.'"

He closed his eyes.

"I've thought about that every day."

Isabella looked at him.

Dante continued.

"I should have spoken when Celeste touched me."

"Yes."

"I should have defended you when people insulted you."

"Yes."

"I should have listened when you told me you were hurting."

"Yes."

He took a breath.

"And I should have understood that silence can be a choice."

Isabella's eyes filled.

He looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

She stepped closer.

"I know."

Then she placed her hand against his cheek.

"And I believe you now."

Dante closed his eyes.

May you like

For the first time, forgiveness did not feel like something he had demanded.

It felt like something they had reached together.
