Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE HERSELF

Isabella did not return to Dante simply because their daughter was born.

She continued living independently.

She resumed therapy.

Reconnected with old friends.

And began planning how she might return to nursing when she was ready.

Dante supported her decisions.

But he no longer tried to make them for her.

One afternoon, Isabella sat beside the nursery window.

Grace slept in her crib.

Dante arrived carrying groceries.

He placed them on the kitchen counter.

Then asked:

"Would you like me to make dinner?"

Isabella smiled.

"Can you cook?"

"Poorly."

She laughed.

It was the first time she had laughed freely in months.

Dante froze.

She noticed.

"What?"

He shook his head.

"Nothing."

But his eyes filled.

Later, they sat together on the porch.

The lake shimmered beyond the trees.

Isabella looked at him.

"I've been thinking about us."

Dante went still.

"Okay."

She took a breath.

"I still love you."

His heart pounded.

"But I don't want to go back to the marriage we had."

He nodded.

"Neither do I."

She studied him.

"I need a partner. Not a protector who decides everything."

"I know."

"I need you to stand beside me when people are cruel."

"I will."

"And I need to believe that if something is wrong, you'll tell me the truth."

Dante swallowed.

"You have my word."

Isabella looked away.

Then back at him.

"I want to try again."

For a moment, Dante couldn't speak.

Then he reached for her hand.

"Thank you."

She smiled faintly.

"Don't thank me yet."

He laughed.

She continued.

"We're going to do this slowly."

He nodded.

"As slowly as you need."

They began rebuilding their marriage.

Not through grand gestures.

But through ordinary days.

Shared meals.

Honest conversations.

Parenting Grace together.

And learning how to disagree without turning every disagreement into a battle.

One evening, Dante found Isabella asleep on the sofa with Grace resting safely in her bassinet nearby.

He covered Isabella with a blanket.

Then sat beside her.

For years, he had believed success meant owning more.

Now he understood that the most valuable thing in his life was something he could never own.

May you like

Her trust.

And he intended to earn it every day.
