Chapter 9 - THE BETRAYAL IN THE COSTA FAMILY
The vault beneath the cathedral contained documents.
Old financial records.
Letters.
And a series of photographs.
One photograph showed Carlo Costa meeting with members of the Roarke organization.
Years before the current conflict.
Leo stared.
His uncle had been playing both sides.
The records revealed a scheme to control shipping routes by provoking conflict between rival families.
The marriage between Leo and Norah threatened that arrangement.
Carlo had wanted the treaty to fail.
And the attack at the docks had been designed to make that happen.
Norah looked at Leo.
“He wanted you to blame the Gallows.”
Leo nodded.
“And he wanted your family to blame me.”
Silence.
Norah swallowed.
“So he tried to kill me.”
Leo's expression hardened.
“Yes.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Leo took her hand.
“We'll stop him.”
May you like
Norah nodded.
“Together.”
