Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT LEO LEARNED HER NAME

Leo had known Norah Gallow for years.
At least, he'd known of her.
The daughter of Patrick Gallow.
The sister of Tommy.
The woman chosen to marry him.
But he hadn't known her.
He hadn't known she loved old jazz records.
Or that she ran five miles every morning.
Or that she had studied nursing before her family pressured her to leave school.
He hadn't known she wanted to open a medical clinic for families who couldn't afford care.
One evening, he asked:
“Why didn't you finish nursing school?”
Norah looked down.
“My father said it wasn't appropriate.”
Leo frowned.
“Why?”
She laughed bitterly.
“Because Gallow women don't work in hospitals.”
Leo studied her.
“Would you go back?”
Norah looked up.
“What?”
“Nursing school.”
She stared.
Then whispered:
“Yes.”
Leo nodded.
“Then you should.”
Norah's eyes filled.
For the first time, someone in her world was encouraging her to become something other than a wife.
She looked at Leo.
“Thank you.”
May you like
He smiled.
And for the first time, she saw the man beneath the reputation.
