Chapter 14

I turned the pages.
There it was.
A clause concerning changes in beneficial ownership and certain unauthorized transfers.
Nathan read it carefully.
Then looked up.
“This could matter.”
My heart raced.
“How?”
He explained that the clause required additional disclosures if control of certain project assets changed.
The company's recent filings suggested there might have been transfers that hadn't been properly reported.
I stared.
“Who approved them?”
Nathan looked at the documents.
Then said:

That evening, I returned to the North Shore mansion.
The house had belonged to my father.
It stood beside the water, surrounded by old trees.

The library.
The dining room.
The small sunroom where Dad used to read the newspaper.
I stopped beside his desk.
For a moment, I could almost hear his voice.
Claire, never let anyone convince you that kindness means surrender.
Tears filled my eyes.
I sat in his chair.
And opened the final drawer.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
My name written across the front.
Claire.

I stared.
Then opened it.
