Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LOVED ME WITHOUT CONDITIONS

Six months later, I met Daniel Hayes.
Not at a gala.
Not at a business conference.
At a bookstore.
He was standing beside the history section, holding a book upside down.
I stared.
“That's an interesting way to read.”
He looked down.
Then laughed.
“I'm trying to impress someone.”
I smiled.
“Is it working?”
“Not yet.”
We talked for twenty minutes.
About books.
Travel.
Chicago winters.
He asked for my number.
I hesitated.
Then gave it to him.
Daniel wasn't a billionaire.
He wasn't powerful.
He didn't own a company with his name on the building.
He was an architect.
Kind.
Patient.
Funny.
He asked about my day.
Remembered small things.
And never made me feel like I was competing for his attention.

For the first time, I began to understand something.
Love wasn't supposed to feel like begging.
