Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT VINCENT LOST HIS EMPIRE
The board called an emergency meeting.
The financial investigation had uncovered enough irregularities to raise serious concerns.
Vincent was placed on temporary leave while independent auditors reviewed the company's transactions.
Richard was furious.
Sophia was suspended.
That evening, Vincent appeared at my gate again.
This time, he didn't bring flowers.
He stood in the rain.
I watched through the camera.
Then opened the intercom.
“Vincent.”
His voice was hoarse.
“Claire.”
I waited.
He looked down.
“I lost my position.”
I swallowed.
“I'm sorry.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You don't have to be.”
I stared.
He continued.
“I spent three years protecting a company while destroying my marriage.”
His voice broke.
“And now I may lose both.”
For a moment, I wanted to comfort him.
Then I remembered all the nights I'd waited alone.
“Vincent.”
He looked up.
