Chapter 3 - THE SECRETARY'S PROMOTION

The next morning, Moretti Holdings announced Sophia Carter's promotion.
Senior Executive Director of Strategic Operations.
A newly created position.
A generous salary.
A company vehicle.
And an office beside Vincent's.
I read the announcement over coffee.
Then put my phone down.
My best friend, Jenna, stared at me across the kitchen table.
“You're kidding.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
She looked furious.
“He promoted her after everything?”
“Apparently.”
Jenna crossed her arms.
“Claire, please tell me you're going to do something.”
I smiled faintly.
“I already did.”
She frowned.
“What?”
I slid a folder across the table.
Inside were copies of the commercial property documents.
Jenna stared.
“Is this real?”
I nodded.
“My father left me more than I realized.”
That afternoon, Nathan called.
“Claire, we have a problem.”
I straightened.
“What kind?”
“Moretti Holdings has filed an emergency petition concerning the land lease.”
I closed my eyes.
“Of course they have.”
Nathan continued.
“They're arguing that the property is essential to ongoing operations.”
I sighed.
“And?”
He hesitated.
“Vincent signed the filing.”
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
My husband.
The man who had promised to protect me.
Was now using company lawyers to challenge my property rights.
I looked toward the window.
Then said quietly:
“Good.”
Nathan paused.
“Good?”
May you like
I nodded.
“Now I know exactly where he stands.”
