Chapter 15 - THE LIFE I CHOSE FOR MYSELF

Three years later, I stood in the garden of the North Shore mansion.
The sun warmed my face.
A little girl laughed nearby.
“Mommy!”
I turned.
My daughter, Emma Hayes, ran toward me.
Dark curls.
Bright eyes.
A smile that looked exactly like Daniel's.
I laughed.
“Careful, sweetheart.”
Daniel appeared behind her.
He lifted Emma into his arms.
“Trouble?”
She giggled.
“Daddy!”
I watched them.
For a moment, I remembered another life.
A Chicago penthouse.
A husband who rarely came home.
A secretary who wore my jewelry.
Then I looked at the life I'd built.
I had expanded Bennett Family Holdings.
Established a scholarship fund in my father's name.
And restored the North Shore mansion into a home filled with laughter.
Daniel and I had married in a small ceremony two years earlier.
No reporters.
No business alliances.
Just love.
That evening, after Emma fell asleep, Daniel found me in the library.
I was holding my old wedding ring.
He sat beside me.
“Thinking about the past?”
I smiled faintly.
“A little.”
He took my hand.
“Regrets?”
I thought about it.
Then shook my head.
“Not about leaving.”
Daniel smiled.
I looked at him.
“Do you know what I learned?”
He raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
I took a breath.
“That love shouldn't require you to disappear.”
His eyes softened.
He kissed my forehead.
“And you never will.”
I leaned against him.
Outside, Lake Michigan glittered beneath the moonlight.
Inside, our daughter slept peacefully.
And the woman who had once begged her husband to come home finally understood something.
I hadn't destroyed my marriage by leaving.
May you like
I had saved myself.
And in doing so, I'd found a life more beautiful than anything I'd ever imagined.
