Chapter 9 - THE DAY DAMIAN LOST HIS EMPIRE

The investigation into Nicholas Vane's financial activities expanded.

Several business entities were examined.

Bank records were subpoenaed.

Auditors reviewed transactions.

And Damian's organization faced scrutiny it had avoided for years.

Some legitimate businesses lost contracts.

Several associates resigned.

Others were questioned by authorities.

Damian watched the empire he'd built begin to fracture.

One afternoon, Victor entered his office.

“Sir, we have a problem.”

Damian looked up.

“What?”

“Three major partners are withdrawing.”

Damian nodded.

“I expected that.”

Victor hesitated.

“There's more.”

He placed another document on the desk.

Damian read it.

A property dispute involving part of the estate.

Evelyn's trust.

The forged transfer.

The land beneath his home.

Damian stared.

Then laughed once.

Bitterly.

“Of course.”

Victor frowned.

“Sir?”

Damian looked toward the window.

“I spent years believing everything I owned made me powerful.”

He placed the document down.

“And I didn't even know who held the rights to part of the ground beneath my feet.”

That evening, Damian called Evelyn.

“I wanted to tell you something.”

She sat on Hannah's couch.

“What?”

“The property records are being corrected.”

Evelyn nodded.

“My attorney told me.”

“I won't contest your legitimate ownership interests.”

She closed her eyes.

“Thank you.”

Damian hesitated.

“And I want you to know something else.”

“What?”

“I've begun separating my legitimate businesses from the rest.”

Evelyn went still.

“Why?”

He looked down.

“Because I don't want to keep living like this.”

She said nothing.

Damian continued.

“I don't want fear to be the only thing people remember about me.”

Evelyn looked toward the window.

For the first time, she heard something in his voice she'd never heard before.

Not pride.

Not control.

Regret.

Damian's empire didn't collapse overnight.

But it changed.

Contracts ended.

Investigations continued.

His influence weakened.

And the man who had once threatened his wife with the impossibility of escape finally understood something.

He had never truly owned her.

May you like

He'd only been fortunate that she chose to stay.

Until she didn't.
