Chapter 7 - THE TRUTH ABOUT MARCO BELL

Marco Bell wasn't Evelyn's lover.

He was a logistics coordinator working with her charitable foundation.

He had spent months organizing deliveries of school supplies to community centers across Chicago.

When Damian's drivers were reassigned, Marco contacted Evelyn because the delays threatened the program.

That was all.

Damian finally met Marco in a neutral office.

Marco looked nervous.

“I didn't do anything wrong.”

Damian sat across from him.

“I know.”

Marco blinked.

“You do?”

Damian nodded.

“I owe you an apology.”

Marco stared.

Damian continued.

“I accused you without evidence.”

Marco swallowed.

“I only wanted the children to get their supplies.”

Damian looked down.

“I understand.”

After the meeting, Damian called Evelyn.

She answered cautiously.

“What?”

“I met Marco.”

Evelyn went still.

“Why?”

“To apologize.”

Silence.

Damian continued.

“He told me about the deliveries.”

“Yes.”

“And the foundation.”

“Yes.”

“And how much work you've been doing.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Damian whispered, “I should have asked you.”

She looked down.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“I should have trusted you.”

“Yes.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Damian said, “Nicholas Vane may have forged documents involving your father's trust.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“I know.”

Damian went still.

“You know?”

“My attorney found them.”

He closed his eyes.

“Evelyn, I'm sorry.”

She stared at the wall.

“Don't apologize for something you haven't fixed.”

Damian nodded.

“Then I'll help make sure the truth comes out.”

She took a breath.

“Through attorneys and investigators.”

“Yes.”

“No threats.”

He hesitated.

Then said, “Yes.”

“No violence.”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Then maybe you're finally listening.”
