Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LET GO

Damian learned about Daniel Mercer through a photograph in a local newspaper.

Evelyn stood beside Daniel at a charity event.

They were smiling.

Daniel's hand rested lightly against her back.

Damian stared at the photograph.

For a moment, jealousy burned through him.

Then he remembered the dining room.

Lydia.

The kiss.

The words he'd spoken.

Run if you dare.

He closed the newspaper.

And did nothing.

Victor entered the office.

“Sir?”

Damian looked up.

“Yes?”

“Mrs. Russo attended the foundation event last night.”

“I know.”

Victor hesitated.

“Would you like a report?”

Damian stared at him.

Then shook his head.

“No.”

Victor blinked.

“Sir?”

“She's not under my surveillance.”

Victor nodded.

“Understood.”

That evening, Damian wrote Evelyn a letter.

He didn't ask her to return.

He didn't mention Daniel.

He didn't demand forgiveness.

He simply wrote the truth.

Evelyn,

I used to believe that loving you meant keeping you inside a world I could control.

I was wrong.

I made our home into a place where you had to measure every word.

I made you feel watched instead of cherished.

And when you finally challenged me, I hurt you in the cruelest way I could imagine.

I kissed your sister because I wanted you to feel powerless.

I will regret that for the rest of my life.

You deserved honesty.

You deserved respect.

You deserved a husband who trusted you.

I was none of those things when it mattered most.

I don't expect you to come back.

I only hope that one day, when you remember our marriage, you won't believe my cruelty meant you weren't worthy of love.

You were.

You always were.

Damian.

He placed the letter in an envelope.

Then sent it through her attorney.

Evelyn read it three days later.

She cried.

Not because she wanted to return.

May you like

But because the apology she'd once desperately needed had finally arrived.

And she no longer needed it to survive.
