Chapter 14 - THE SISTER WHO CAME BACK DIFFERENT

Two years after the night at the Russo estate, Lydia wrote Evelyn a letter.
She had spent months cooperating with the investigation.
She'd lost friends.
Her reputation.
And the comfortable life she'd once expected to gain.
But she had also begun working.
Living independently.
And confronting the choices she'd made.
Evelyn opened the letter at her kitchen table.
Evie,
I know I don't deserve forgiveness.
I betrayed you because I was jealous of a life I didn't understand.
I convinced myself that your marriage was perfect.
I wanted what you had.
And I hurt you because I couldn't bear to admit that my unhappiness was my responsibility.
I'm sorry.
Not because my life became difficult.
Not because Damian rejected me.
But because you were my sister, and I chose to hurt you.
I don't expect you to answer.
I only hope you're happy.
Lydia.
Evelyn read the letter twice.
Then placed it beside her father's photograph.
Three weeks later, Evelyn agreed to meet Lydia in a public café.
Her sister looked different.
Older.
Quieter.
She stood when Evelyn approached.
“Evie.”
Evelyn sat.
“Hello, Lydia.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Lydia began crying.
“I'm sorry.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“I know.”
Lydia swallowed.
“Can you ever forgive me?”
Evelyn took a breath.
“I don't know.”
Her sister nodded.
Evelyn continued.
“But I wanted to see whether we could speak honestly.”
Lydia wiped her tears.
“I'd like that.”
They talked for an hour.
Not about Damian.
Not about money.
About childhood.
Their parents.
The years they'd lost.
When they parted, Evelyn didn't hug her.
Not yet.
But she said something Lydia hadn't expected.
“Take care of yourself.”
Lydia smiled through her tears.
“You too, Evie.”
Forgiveness wasn't a door Evelyn could simply open.
May you like
It was a choice she might make one day.
And she no longer believed anyone had the right to demand it.
