Chapter 12 - THE DIVORCE THAT GAVE HER BACK HER NAME

The divorce was finalized on a cold November morning.

Evelyn wore a cream coat.

Damian wore a dark suit.

They stood on opposite sides of the courthouse hallway.

For six years, they'd shared a home.

A bed.

A life.

Now they were strangers with memories.

Damian approached.

“Evelyn.”

She turned.

“Damian.”

He looked tired.

Older.

His dark hair showed the first traces of silver.

“How are you?”

She smiled faintly.

“Good.”

He nodded.

“I'm glad.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Damian looked at her left hand.

No ring.

He swallowed.

“Do you hate me?”

Evelyn studied him.

“No.”

His eyes filled.

She continued.

“But I don't want to be your wife anymore.”

Damian closed his eyes.

“I know.”

She took a breath.

“I loved you.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“And I think part of me always will.”

A tear slipped down his cheek.

“But love doesn't erase what happened.”

He lowered his head.

“No.”

The court proceedings concluded.

Their marriage was legally over.

Evelyn reclaimed her maiden name.

Bennett.

She signed the final documents.

Then stepped outside.

The sky was gray.

The air was cold.

But she felt light.

Damian followed her onto the courthouse steps.

“Evelyn?”

She turned.

He hesitated.

Then whispered, “I'm sorry.”

She looked at him.

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“Will you be happy?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Yes.”

His eyes filled.

“Good.”

She stepped closer.

For one brief moment, she placed her hand against his cheek.

Not as his wife.

Not as a promise.

As a goodbye.

Then she walked away.

May you like

Damian watched her disappear into the crowd.

And this time, he didn't tell anyone to stop her.
