Chapter 13 - THE SECOND CHANCE SHE GAVE HERSELF

A year after the divorce, Evelyn Bennett stood in front of a renovated community center.

A banner hung above the entrance.

THE BENNETT FAMILY LEARNING HOUSE

Children gathered beneath it.

Parents smiled.

Volunteers carried boxes of books.

Evelyn looked at the building.

Then at the photograph of her father displayed near the entrance.

Her eyes filled.

Daniel Mercer stood beside her.

“You did it.”

Evelyn laughed softly.

“We did it.”

He smiled.

“Mostly you.”

She shook her head.

“Not mostly me.”

Daniel took her hand.

Evelyn looked at him.

For months, they'd been dating.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He had never pressured her.

Never demanded details about her marriage.

Never tried to compete with Damian.

He simply loved her.

Quietly.

Consistently.

During the opening ceremony, Evelyn spoke about her father.

“He taught me that every building has a way out.”

The audience smiled.

She continued.

“But he also taught me something else.”

Her voice softened.

“That the most important thing isn't escaping a place where you don't belong.”

She looked toward the children.

“It's finding the courage to build a place where you do.”

The audience applauded.

Daniel smiled.

And Evelyn felt something she'd once believed was impossible.

Peace.

That evening, Daniel took her to dinner.

They sat beside a window overlooking the city.

He reached across the table.

“Evelyn?”

She smiled.

“Yes?”

“I love you.”

Her breath caught.

He continued.

“You don't have to say it back.”

She laughed softly.

“Daniel—”

“I just wanted you to know.”

Evelyn looked at him.

Then smiled through her tears.

“I love you too.”

He exhaled.

“Good.”

She laughed.

“Good?”

He grinned.

“I was trying to be calm.”

She leaned forward and kissed him.

For the first time in years, love felt simple.

May you like

Not because life was perfect.

But because she didn't have to be afraid of it.
