Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT A NEW LIFE

Six months after leaving the Russo estate, Evelyn moved into her own apartment in Chicago.

Not a mansion.

Not a penthouse.

A bright two-bedroom apartment overlooking a small park.

She loved it.

She bought furniture herself.

Painted the kitchen pale blue.

And hung her father's photograph beside the front door.

Evelyn also expanded her charitable foundation.

She worked with community organizations to provide school supplies, after-school tutoring, and support for families experiencing financial hardship.

Marco Bell became the foundation's logistics director.

Hannah helped coordinate fundraising events.

And Evelyn discovered she was good at making decisions without asking permission.

One afternoon, Rebecca Sloan called.

“Evelyn, we have an update.”

Evelyn sat down.

“What?”

“Nicholas Vane has been charged in connection with the financial scheme.”

She closed her eyes.

Rebecca continued.

“The forged documents are part of the investigation.”

Evelyn nodded.

“And Lydia?”

“She has provided information through counsel.”

Evelyn looked down.

For a moment, she remembered her little sister.

The child who feared thunderstorms.

The girl who once followed her everywhere.

Then she remembered the dining room.

The kiss.

The betrayal.

She swallowed.

“Thank you.”

That evening, Evelyn attended a small charity dinner.

She wore a navy-blue dress.

No diamonds.

No expensive jewelry.

Just a simple necklace her father had given her.

During the event, a man approached.

He was tall, with warm brown eyes and an easy smile.

“Evelyn Bennett?”

She turned.

“Yes?”

“I'm Daniel Mercer.”

He extended his hand.

“I work with the city education partnership.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Nice to meet you.”

They talked for nearly an hour.

Daniel listened.

Asked thoughtful questions.

And never once mentioned Damian Russo.

When he finally invited her to coffee, Evelyn hesitated.

Then smiled.

“I'd like that.”

May you like

For the first time in years, she allowed herself to imagine a future that didn't revolve around her husband.

And that future looked beautiful.
