Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Absolute Severance

================================================================================

Courtroom 3B of the Family and Criminal Appellate Division convened at 10:00 AM under Chief Magistrate Judge Horacio Morales.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity.

Mauricio sat at the defense table, flanked by a court-appointed public defender after three prominent private law firms refused to take his case due to the overwhelming forensic evidence.

Judge Morales adjusted his spectacles, reviewing the forensic medical trauma charts, the video recordings from the residential security cameras, and the financial audit of the forged loan guarantees.

“The court has reviewed the exhaustive evidence submitted in the matter of Sterling-Cruz versus Ortega,” Judge Morales declared, his voice echoing through the vaulted hall with absolute moral authority. “The defendant, Mauricio Ortega, engaged in a calculated, depraved campaign of domestic battery, fraudulent marital inducement, and criminal forgery against an innocent partner.”

Judge Morales brought down his heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that shook the courtroom.

“By decree of this tribunal:

The marriage between Valeria Sterling-Cruz and Mauricio Ortega is hereby declared null, void, and annulled ab initio on the grounds of fraud and severe domestic violence.

The defendant, Mauricio Ortega, is sentenced to Four Years in state correctional custody for Felony Domestic Battery and Aggravated Commercial Forgery.

The defendant is ordered to pay full civil restitution of 6.2 million pesos to the victims' compensation fund.”

Judge Morales struck the gavel a second time.

“Furthermore, a permanent, lifetime protective order is enacted across all national jurisdictions. The defendant and his family are barred from approaching within one thousand meters of Valeria Sterling-Cruz or any property of Horizonte Capital.”

Doña Beatriz let out a strangled shriek from the gallery, collapsing into her seat as federal judicial marshals stepped behind Mauricio.

Click. Snap.

The heavy steel handcuffs locked around Mauricio’s wrists with a sharp, resonant crack.

As he was escorted through the heavy iron holding door, weeping and begging for forgiveness into the cold air, I stood up, smoothed down my tailored blazer, and laced my fingers with Rodrigo Navarro in quiet, unyielding triumph.

The door clicked shut behind him forever.
