Chapter 7 - The Forensic Audit of a Gold-Digger

I did not speak. I walked across the polished marble floor with slow, measured grace and took my seat at the head of the conference table.
Rodrigo Navarro stood beside me, opening a thick leather portfolio.
Mauricio took three hesitant, trembling steps forward, his eyes darting frantically across the room.
“Vale...” Mauricio choked out, his voice cracking with desperate, pathetic confusion. “What is this place? Why are you dressed like this? Why are these people calling you Chairwoman?”
I set my glass down on the coaster without making a sound.
“My name is Valeria Sterling-Cruz, Mauricio,” I said, my voice level, cold, and cutting like diamond through glass. “I am the founder and majority shareholder of Horizonte Capital.”
Beatriz’s face drained of every drop of color. Her hand flew to her throat, clutching her faux-pearl necklace as if she were suffocating.
“You...” Beatriz gasped, her knees shaking beneath her floral skirt. “You’re the owner of the fund? But you lived in that modest two-room rental! You drove an old sedan!”
“I lived simply because I wanted to know if a man could love me for who I am, not for the billions of pesos attached to my family name,” I replied, looking directly into Mauricio’s bloodshot eyes. “For two years, I believed Mauricio was that man. I quietly funded your father’s failing business. I paid off your brother’s gambling debts through dummy supplier credits. I gave your family dignity when you were six weeks away from total bankruptcy.”
Mauricio dropped to his knees on the marble floor, sliding toward the edge of the table with his hands outstretched.
“Vale! My love! Please!” Mauricio wept, tears and snot streaming down his face as his arrogant facade shattered into absolute ruin. “I didn't know! If I had known who you were, I would never have let my mother bring that bucket! I swear on my life, I love you! The slap... it was the alcohol, Vale! I lost my mind!”
“You didn't lose your mind, Mauricio,” Rodrigo Navarro intervened, sliding a thirty-page financial audit across the table. “You simply revealed your true nature.”
Rodrigo tapped the first page.
“Over the last eight months,” Rodrigo stated for the official legal record, “Mauricio Ortega secretly took out three personal high-interest loans totaling 4.5 million pesos from private loan sharks in Tepito, explicitly forging Valeria’s signature as the primary guarantor. His plan was to force Valeria into an uncontested spousal debt consolidation after the wedding, using her modest salary to absorb his personal liabilities while he took credit for his father’s corporate recovery.”
The room went dead silent.
Beatriz looked at her son in pure, unadulterated horror. “Mauricio... you forged her name for loan sharks?!”

“He didn't just want a wife, Beatriz,” I said softly, rising from my chair and looking down at the kneeling coward. “He wanted an unpaid maid, a punching bag, and a financial shield to pay for his vanity.”
