Chapter 6 - The Mother-in-Law’s Public Humiliation

================================================================================

By 11:30 AM, Doña Beatriz was completely unhinged.

Convinced that this was an elaborate, petty extortion scheme cooked up by an ungrateful girl, Beatriz demanded that Mauricio drive her directly to the headquarters of Horizonte Capital in Polanco.

“I will drag that girl out by her hair in front of her bosses!” Beatriz hissed as they stepped into the soaring marble atrium of the Horizonte Tower. “I will tell everyone in this building that she abandoned her husband on her wedding night and attacked her mother-in-law with dirty water!”

Mauricio hurried behind his mother, his tailored suit wrinkled, his hands sweating profusely.

Beatriz strode up to the main security reception desk, slamming her crocodile-skin handbag onto the marble counter.

“I demand to see Valeria Cruz immediately!” Beatriz barked at the two security officers. “Tell her that her mother-in-law is here to put an end to this ridiculous circus!”

The head of security, a broad-shouldered retired federal commander named Gabriel, looked at Beatriz with cool, impenetrable detachment.

“Name?” Gabriel asked.

“Beatriz Ortega! And this is my son, Mauricio Ortega—Valeria’s lawful husband!”

Gabriel tapped his earpiece. “Control, the subjects have arrived at the lobby reception. Prepare Escort Protocol Alpha.”

The heavy frosted glass security turnstiles clicked open.

“Take the private elevator to the 45th floor, Mrs. Ortega,” Gabriel said with a chillingly polite smile. “The Chairwoman is expecting you.”

Beatriz smirked smugly, turning to her son. “You see, Mauricio? She’s hiding in some junior cubicle, trembling with fear because she knows she went too far. Watch how quickly she begs for mercy when I look her in the eye.”

The high-speed elevator ascended silently to the penthouse floor.

When the brass-trimmed doors slid open, Beatriz and Mauricio stepped out into a vast, sun-drenched executive lounge overlooking the city.

Seated around the lounge were three senior corporate attorneys in bespoke dark suits, alongside two uniformed judicial officers.

And standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, holding a crystal glass of sparkling mineral water, was me.

I turned around slowly.

Beatriz froze. Her jaw slumped open as she took in my Carolina Herrera tailored suit, the flawless diamond studs at my ears, and the unmistakable, majestic aura of undisputed power radiating from every fiber of my being.

“Valeria...?” Beatriz stammered, her voice losing every ounce of its haughty volume.
