Chapter 8 - The Courthouse Showdown

================================================================================
Three days later, the grand steps of the Superior Court of Justice of Mexico City were swarming with financial journalists, camera crews, and prominent industry executives.
Headlines had dominated the national news cycle:
‘The Secret Heiress of Horizonte Capital: Billionaire Chairwoman Files for Immediate Annulment and Criminal Battery Charges on Wedding Night.’
‘Ortega Construcciones Plunges into Total Liquidation Following Multi-Million Peso Fraud Exposure.’
Mauricio and his parents arrived at the courthouse in a battered municipal taxi, having had their luxury vehicles repossessed by judicial bailiffs the previous afternoon.
Mauricio wore a wrinkled off-the-rack suit, his eyes hollow, dark-ringed, and terrified. Beside him, Doña Beatriz was clutching a rosary, covering her face with a cheap scarf to avoid the blinding glare of press photographers.
Standing at the top of the courthouse steps, flanked by Rodrigo Navarro and six executive security guards, was me.
I wore a tailored navy overcoat, looking serene, radiant, and completely untouchable.
Mauricio pushed past the reporters, rushing toward the steps with his hands clasped together in desperate supplication.
“Valeria! Please!” Mauricio shouted, loud enough for every television microphone to catch his words. “Talk to me! Don't destroy my family! My father is in the hospital with a cardiac crisis! We have no money to pay the workers! I will do whatever you want! I will wash your feet on live television! Just drop the lawsuit!”
I stopped on the top landing, looking down at the man who, seventy-two hours earlier, had told me to get on my knees and scrub dirty laundry.
“Justice is not for sale, Mauricio,” I said clearly, my voice carrying across the entire courthouse plaza. “You told me on our wedding night to see how long I would last without you. Today, you will see how long you last without my mercy.”

I turned and walked through the towering bronze doors of the courthouse, leaving Mauricio weeping on the pavement as press cameras captured his final, humiliating collapse before the nation.
