Chapter 8 - The Reconstructive Miracle

Two weeks later, the morning sun rose over the private pediatric surgical solarium at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Dr. Robert Bennett, working alongside a team of three pediatric dermatological specialists, completed the final micro-cellular cold-laser therapy session on Ellie’s cheek and neck.
The protective silicone compression bandages were gently removed.
I held Ellie on my lap, my heart pounding in my chest.
Dr. Bennett held up a small hand mirror with a soft smile. “Look in the mirror, little princess.”
Ellie looked at her reflection.
Her skin was smooth, pristine, and glowing with radiant, healthy color. The advanced regenerative matrix had completely repaired the epidermis, leaving zero hypertrophic scarring, zero nerve damage, and no visible marks on her beautiful face.
Ellie giggled, touching her cheek with her chubby little fingers. “Mommy! The red owie went bye-bye!”
I buried my face in her soft curls, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated gratitude.
“Yes, my brave baby,” I whispered, hugging her tight against my chest. “The owie is gone forever.”

My father walked into the sunlit room, carrying a massive plush teddy bear and a bouquet of pink lilies, smiling from the bottom of his soul.
“She’s whole, Clara,” Dad whispered, kissing the top of my head. “She’s whole and safe.”
