Chapter 7 - The Arrest of Linda Vance

Deputy Sheriff Marcus Stone stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.
“Linda Vance,” Deputy Stone announced loudly. “Under Virginia Criminal Code Section 18.2-51.2, you are under arrest for Aggravated Malicious Wounding of an Infant with a Burning Substance, Attempted Involuntary Manslaughter, and Tampering with Criminal Evidence.”
Linda shrieked, flailing her arms, backing into the glass display cabinet. “Gary! Ben! Do something! I didn't mean to! It was an accident! Clara, please! I’m your daughter’s grandmother!”
“You gave up the right to call yourself her grandmother the moment you extended your arm across that table, Linda,” I replied coldly.
Two female deputies seized Linda’s wrists, twisting them behind her back and snapping the cold iron cuffs shut.
Gary fell to his knees on the Persian rug, weeping in pathetic, ragged gasps. “Judge Vance... please! I had nothing to do with the coffee! I was just trying to protect my wife! Don't take the house! We have nowhere to go!”
Julian Hayes slid the eviction order onto the foyer table.
“You have twenty minutes to collect your personal clothing, Mr. Vance,” Julian stated ruthlessly. “The moving crews are outside. Everything purchased with embezzled corporate funds is officially seized as restitution collateral.”
Ben stumbled through the front door, looking disheveled, having sprinted from his car.
“Clara! Dad! Please!” Ben wept, dropping to his knees beside his father, crawling toward my shoes. “I love you! I love Ellie! I’ll testify against my mother! I’ll sign whatever you want! Just don't divorce me! Don't leave me with nothing!”
I looked down at the man who had watched my daughter burn and chosen silence.

“You didn't choose Ellie when she was screaming at the sink, Ben,” I said softly. “Now you have the rest of your life to live with your choice.”
I turned, walked down the stone steps into the bright morning sunshine, and never looked back.
