Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the Mansion

At 8:15 AM, the double carved-oak front doors of the Vance estate were thrown open by Deputy Sheriff Marcus Stone.

Walking up the stone steps, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-grey wool suit and tailored silk blouse, was me.

Beside me walked my father, Arthur Vance, flanked by Julian Hayes and four armed executive protection officers.

Linda and Gary stood paralyzed in the grand foyer, surrounded by their expensive oil paintings and antique furniture.

“Clara!” Gary shouted, rushing forward with his hands outstretched. “What is the meaning of this circus?! You brought police to our home?!”

“This is not your home, Gary,” I replied, my voice slicing through the vaulted foyer like an icy blade.

Linda stepped forward, her face twisted in venomous fury. “You ungrateful little brat! We took you into our family! We gave you our name! How dare you use your father’s petty legal tricks to freeze our cards!”

My father took one step forward.

When Arthur Vance looked down at Linda, the air in the foyer turned completely freezing.

“My name is Judge Arthur Vance, Linda,” Dad spoke, his voice carrying the terrifying, unshakeable authority that had sentenced crime bosses to federal penitentiaries. “The name you carry was rented from my conglomerate. The roof above your head was paid for with my money. And the child you burned with boiling coffee is the sole heiress to a four-billion-dollar empire.”

Linda froze. Her breath caught in her throat. Her eyes darted from my father’s face to the gold-embossed crest on Julian Hayes’s leather briefcase.

“Four... four billion...?” Linda stammered, her jaw dropping in sheer, unadulterated horror. “Ben told us... Ben said her family was middle-class!”

“Ben was tested for three years to see if he was a man of honor,” I said, stepping closer. “He failed every test. And you proved that you are a monster who belongs behind bars.”
