Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Absolute Justice

Three months later, Courtroom 302 of the Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing hearing of Diane Bennett.

Diane sat at the defense table in an ill-fitting beige county suit, her dyed hair grown out grey and unkempt, her former arrogance completely crushed beneath the weight of three months in county detention. Beside her sat Brooke, who had been ordered to perform two hundred hours of community service for false police reporting.

Judge Evelyn Harrison reviewed the state's sentencing memorandum with stern, uncompromising authority.

“The court has reviewed the unedited video evidence, the medical trauma reports of Dr. Howard, and the extensive forensic history of domestic intimidation,” Judge Harrison declared, her voice echoing through the silent hall. “The defendant, Diane Bennett, displayed a shocking, predatory disregard for the physical and emotional safety of an innocent two-year-old child.”

Judge Harrison struck her gavel with a resounding, thunderous crack.

“On the charge of Felony Aggravated Battery to a Minor, Diane Bennett is hereby sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections at Logan Correctional Center, with zero eligibility for early probation, followed by a permanent ten-year restraining order protecting Lily Vance and Emily Vance.”

Diane let out a choked shriek and collapsed forward, burying her face into her trembling hands as bailiffs stepped forward and clicked the heavy security chains around her waist.

Brooke burst into tears, covering her face to avoid the courtroom sketch artists.

Jason sat in the rear row of the public gallery, wearing an old canvas jacket, completely ignored by everyone. He had been stripped of his architectural license, evicted from his apartment, and was now working as an hourly draftsman for a suburban contractor, living in a cramped basement studio in Cicero.

As I walked down the center aisle holding three-year-old Lily in my arms, accompanied by Victoria Sterling, Jason stood up hesitantly.

“Emily...” Jason whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable regret. “Can I just... can I just tell Lily I love her?”

Lily buried her face into my neck, wrapping her small arms tightly around my shoulders, completely turning away from him.

I paused, looked Jason dead in the eye, and spoke the final words he would ever hear from me:

“Lily already has everything she needs, Jason. She has a mother who will never let anyone hurt her again.”

I walked past him through the heavy oak doors, stepping out into the brilliant Chicago sunshine without looking back.
