Chapter 4 - The Social Media Smear Campaign

While Victoria Sterling was presenting our emergency petition before Chief Judge Harrison at the Cook County Courthouse, Diane and Brooke Bennett were busy executing their own plan.
Believing that public opinion could bully me into surrender, Brooke uploaded an edited twenty-second video clip to her Instagram and Facebook accounts, where she had fifty thousand lifestyle followers.
The clip showed the immediate aftermath of the birthday dinner: Diane crying dramatically on the floor surrounded by broken cake, Jason holding his swollen cheek with soup dripping from his tie, and me grabbing my canvas bag.
Brooke paired the video with a tearful caption:
‘Last night, my sweet 62-year-old mother was violently assaulted at her own birthday dinner by my unstable sister-in-law Emily. She struck my brother three times, destroyed our family home, and kidnapped our niece into the night. We are terrified for Lily’s safety. Please share and help us expose this monster!’
Within three hours, the post went viral across Chicago parenting groups and local social media. Over four thousand comments flooded the post, calling for my immediate arrest.
At 11:30 AM, Jason sent me a text message from a new number:
‘Look at what Brooke posted, Emily. Everyone in Chicago knows you’re an abusive psycho. The police are going to take Lily away from you and put you in a psychiatric ward. Sign the full custody surrender and transfer your shares of the firm to Mom by 5:00 PM, and I’ll tell Brooke to delete the video. You have four hours.’
I sat in Victoria Sterling’s conference room, watching the notification pop up on my screen.
Victoria glanced at the text and let out a dry, chilling laugh.
“They really believe a twenty-second edited clip is a weapon,” Victoria mused, sipping her espresso. “They don't realize they just committed felony tampering with public evidence and statutory defamation during an active child protection investigation.”
“What’s the countermove?” I asked calmly.

Victoria gestured toward her senior tech forensic analyst, Marcus.
“Marcus, pull the full unedited livestream stream cache from the Meta content delivery server via our expedited judicial subpoena,” Victoria ordered. “Let’s show Chicago what happened in the forty seconds before the cake fell.”
