Chapter 3 - The Iron Attorney of Chicago

At 7:45 AM on Monday morning, I walked through the double glass doors of Sterling & Associates on the 42nd floor of the Willis Tower.

Lily sat securely in her stroller holding her stuffed bunny, her left cheek treated with soothing ointment but still displaying the unmistakable purple-red outline of Diane’s hand.

Victoria Sterling rose from behind her massive walnut desk. At fifty-five, with silver-streaked hair cut into a sharp bob and wearing an immaculate charcoal pinstripe suit, Victoria was known across the Midwest as the "Executioner of Corrupt Husbands."

She knelt beside Lily’s stroller, her expression softening into profound gentleness. She lightly touched Lily’s hand.

“Good morning, little architect,” Victoria whispered. Then she stood, and the warmth vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating aura of a top-tier courtroom predator.

“Let me see the full folder, Emily,” Victoria commanded.

I laid the black leather-bound binder containing the thirty-eight exhibits on the desk, alongside the certified urgent-care records and a high-speed SSD drive containing the raw cloud backups.

Victoria flipped through the pages with clinical speed. Her sharp eyes scanned the bank transfers, the photographic timelines of bruises, the audio transcripts, and finally the urgent-care report stamped by Dr. Howard.

A slow, predatory smile formed on Victoria’s lips.

“Emily, most spouses bring me emotional ramblings, half-remembered arguments, and hearsay,” Victoria said, tapping the edge of the binder against the desk. “You didn't build a divorce petition. You built a federal-grade forensic indictment.”

“Jason thinks I am a penniless interior draftsman who will beg him for a rental stipend,” I replied. “He forgets that every structural blueprint licensed by Bennett & Vance Architecture over the last six years bears my individual copyright seal.”

“He is about to receive an education in asset liability,” Victoria said, pulling a stack of pre-drafted legal pleadings from her folder. “Here is our opening strike:

An Emergency Ex Parte Order of Protection barring Jason, Diane, and Brooke from coming within 1,000 feet of you and Lily.

Immediate suspension of all spousal and parental visitation rights pending a complete forensic psychological and child abuse evaluation.

An emergency judicial freeze on every domestic and commercial bank account registered under Bennett & Vance LLC and Diane Bennett’s holding trust.”

Victoria signed her signature with a gold Montblanc pen.

“By lunchtime, Emily, the Bennett dynasty will discover that the quiet woman they trampled on was the only load-bearing pillar in their house.”
