Chapter 7 - The Mother-in-Law’s Handcuffs

At 5:00 PM, four marked Chicago Police cruisers and an unmarked Child Protection Division SUV pulled up in front of the luxury high-rise on Lake Shore Drive where Diane Bennett’s condo was located.
Dozens of residents and local news reporters stood on the sidewalk, filming with their smartphones as Detective Kowalski and three uniformed officers rode the elevator to the 18th floor.
When Detective Kowalski knocked on the door of Penthouse 18B, Diane opened it wearing a silk dressing gown, clutching an ice pack to her hip.
“What is the meaning of this intrusion?” Diane demanded, trying to maintain her aristocratic disdain. “My son is handling this matter with the court!”
Detective Kowalski didn't waste a second. “Diane Bennett, I have a warrant for your arrest issued by the Circuit Court of Cook County, charging you with Felony Aggravated Battery to a Child under the age of thirteen, and Child Endangerment.”
Diane’s eyes bulged in pure shock. “Are you insane?! I am Diane Bennett! I was disciplining my own grandchild in my private home!”
“Discipline does not involve blunt-force facial trauma that leaves finger contusions on a two-year-old, ma'am,” Kowalski replied coldly. “Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
“No! Don't you touch me! Jason! Brooke!” Diane screamed, flailing her arms as she tried to retreat into the apartment.
Two female officers swiftly stepped forward, grabbed Diane’s wrists, and locked the steel handcuffs behind her back with a sharp, resonant CLICK.
“This is an outrage! I have high blood pressure! I know the mayor!” Diane shrieked as she was escorted down the hallway in full view of her neighbors.
Down in the lobby, the flashbulbs of twenty press photographers erupted as Diane was led out the glass doors in handcuffs, her face red with humiliation, her expensive silk slippers dragging across the pavement as she was pushed into the back of a police cruiser.
