Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Righteous Retribution

Six months later, Courtroom 4B of the State Circuit Court was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Evelyn Vance and Gregory Cole.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery was myself, dressed in an immaculate tailored charcoal suit, accompanied by Julian Hayes. Beside us sat Arthur Vance, looking distinguished, calm, and sovereign.

Evelyn Vance and Gregory Cole sat at the defense table in bright orange prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet secured in heavy iron transport chains. Evelyn’s former high-society vanity had been completely pulverized by six months in county detention; her hair was grey, her face gaunt and hollow.

Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

“Evelyn Vance, Gregory Cole,” Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the silent stone chamber like rolling thunder. “You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous conspiracy to systematically embezzle millions from a family institution, while utilizing domestic violence, intimidation, and fraud to cover your crimes.”

Judge Sterling brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that resonated through the room.

“Evelyn Vance is hereby sentenced to fourteen years at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women without the possibility of early parole.”

Evelyn collapsed forward onto the table, letting out a broken, hysterical wail as state marshals secured her transport chains.

“Gregory Cole is sentenced to eighteen years at the United States Penitentiary, Otisville, followed by full financial restitution.”

Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.

“The marriage between Clara Vance and Daniel Vance is declared permanently dissolved ab initio, with Clara Vance awarded a $1,000,000 forensic consulting honorarium from the recovered estate assets.”

As the marshals hauled the two weeping convicts through the heavy iron holding door forever, Arthur Vance turned to me and took my hand in both of his.

“Thank you, Clara,” Arthur whispered, his eyes shining with profound gratitude. “You saved this family’s name. You are more of a leader than my own son ever was.”

“I only sought the truth, Arthur,” I smiled softly.
