Chapter 2 - The Lover in the Recording

Arthur Vance did not let go of his wife’s wrist.

His grip was immovable steel. At sixty-two, Arthur carried the quiet, formidable presence of a man who had built a maritime transport empire from the docks up. He had survived union strikes, corporate saboteurs, and market crashes, but the look in his grey eyes at that moment was colder than arctic ice.

“Arthur… darling… please,” Evelyn gasped, her voice trembling violently as she tried to pull away. “That… that’s an artificial intelligence fake! Clara engineered it! You know how technology is these days!”

I stepped to the center of the room, holding my phone high so the entire extended family—uncles, cousins, and board directors who had gathered for Sunday lunch—could see the metadata timestamp on the screen.

“The file was recorded at 6:42 PM yesterday in the west garden gazebo,” I announced, my voice steady, clear, and cutting through the room like a razor blade. “The frequency matches the unencrypted radio band of your private satellite line. And the man laughing on that speaker is Gregory Cole—the Chief Financial Consultant Arthur hired three months ago to audit the corporate pension fund.”

Aunt Martha dropped her crystal wine glass onto the Persian rug.

Daniel stepped forward from the archway, his face pale with bewildered panic. “Mom… what is Gregory Cole doing talking about my trust fund? You told me Gregory was helping me secure the vice-presidency!”

Evelyn didn’t answer her son. Her eyes darted frantically toward the double front doors, searching for an escape route that no longer existed.

Arthur slowly lowered Evelyn’s hand, turning his back on her with absolute, unyielding revulsion.

“Julian,” Arthur spoke without raising his voice.

From the foyer, Julian Hayes—the chief legal litigator for Vance Enterprises—stepped into the dining hall holding a sleek carbon-fiber briefcase.

“Lock down every corporate account, every credit facility, and every liquid asset registered under Evelyn’s name,” Arthur commanded. “And call Detective Marcus Stone of the Special Investigations Unit.”
