Chapter 3 - The Fifty-Thousand Dollar Blackmail

Within twenty minutes, the dining room transformed into an operational legal interrogation hub.
The family guests were escorted out by private security, leaving only Arthur, Daniel, Evelyn, myself, and Julian Hayes around the mahogany dining table.
Julian opened his briefcase, laying three red-stamped bank discovery folios on the table.
“Let’s address the $500 Mrs. Vance claimed Clara stole this morning,” Julian began with sharp, clinical precision.
Julian pointed to the transaction logs:
The Cash Withdrawal: Evelyn had withdrawn $50,000 in cash from the Vance family household operational account forty-eight hours earlier.
The Courier Manifest: $49,500 of that cash was hand-delivered to a private safe deposit facility at the Grand Hyatt in downtown Manhattan, registered to Gregory Cole.
The Planted Envelope: The remaining $500 had been slipped into Clara’s laundry basket by Evelyn twenty minutes before she dragged her by the hair into the dining room.
“She needed a domestic scandal,” Julian explained, looking directly at Arthur. “Evelyn knew that Clara had discovered the unauthorized accounting entries. By staging an accusation of theft, Evelyn intended to have Clara thrown out of the house and discredited before Clara could present the ledger discrepancies to you, Mr. Vance.”
Daniel sank into a dining chair, burying his face in his trembling hands. “Mom… you lied to me? You told me you saw Clara take the money from your purse!”
Evelyn glared at her son with venomous disgust, her polished mask completely peeling away. “Shut up, Daniel! If you had half the brains your father had, I wouldn't have had to manage our wealth behind your back!”

Arthur walked to the head of the table, placing both hands flat on the polished wood.
“You didn’t manage our wealth, Evelyn,” Arthur whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal stillness. “You were preparing to rob this family blind and leave your own son with the debt.”
