Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit of Evelyn Vance

At 2:30 PM, Senior Detective Marcus Stone and two forensic investigators from the County District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division arrived at Vance Manor.

Detective Stone walked into the study where Evelyn was being detained under private security supervision.

On the desk lay the complete forensic audit packet compiled by myself and Julian Hayes over the past forty-eight hours:

The Forged Notarizations: Certified handwriting analysis proving Evelyn forged Arthur’s signature on the commercial loan deeds.

The Wiretapped Phone Transcripts: Audio intercepts authorized under emergency spousal discovery laws documenting twelve conversations between Evelyn and Gregory Cole discussing the offshore asset transfers.

The Stolen Jewelry Manifest: Receipts showing Evelyn had pawned $180,000 worth of heirloom family jewelry, replacing the vault pieces with cubic zirconia replicas to generate untraceable cash.

Detective Stone reviewed the files, his jaw setting into an expression of severe professional disgust.

“Mrs. Vance,” Detective Stone announced, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. “Under State Penal Code § 487 and § 503, you are under arrest for Grand Larceny, Fiduciary Embezzlement, Forgery in the First Degree, and Scheme to Defraud.”

Evelyn began screaming, flailing her arms, knocking over an antique porcelain vase as two female officers seized her wrists and snapped the cold iron cuffs shut.

“Arthur! Tell them to stop!” Evelyn wailed, her mascara running in black streaks down her face. “I am your wife! You cannot send me to prison!”

Arthur stood by the window, looking out over the manicured lawns he had built with his own hands.

He did not look back.

“Take her away,” Arthur said quietly.
