Chapter 8 - The Interrogation of Brandon Vance

================================================================================
By 2:00 PM, Brandon Vance was seated inside Interrogation Room 4 at the Milwaukee County Criminal Justice Facility on 9th Street.
His expensive suit had been replaced by a coarse orange inmate jumpsuit. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and swollen from hours of frantic weeping, his wrists and ankles secured with heavy steel transport chains.
Across the metal table sat ADA Karen Vance and Detective Miller.
On the table between them lay a three-hundred-page evidentiary binder:
The Video Surveillance: High-definition security footage from the River North apartment corridor timestamped Monday at 4:28 PM, capturing the loud smack of Brandon striking Margaret, followed by his vicious threats.
The Bank Trail: Certified bank records proving Brandon deposited the $10,500 into his private account four hours before accusing his mother-in-law of theft.
The Duplex Title: The purchase agreement for the Wauwatosa duplex signed with embezzled marital funds.
“You’re looking at eight to twelve years in the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, Mr. Vance,” ADA Vance stated with razor-sharp precision. “Felony Elder Abuse with Bodily Injury, Extortion, and Grand Larceny.”
Brandon began hyperventilating, tears dripping onto his orange collar.
“It was a mistake!” Brandon sobbed, thrashing against his chains. “I was under so much financial pressure! My brothers were going to lose their businesses! My mother told me Elena was too controlling with the money! I just wanted to build something for my family!”
“Your family was the woman who paid for your truck, paid for your brother’s wedding, and nursed your mother back to health,” Detective Miller replied with absolute disdain. “And you struck her sixty-eight-year-old mother across the face because she wiped dust off your desk.”
Behind the one-way glass in the observation suite, I stood beside Claire and my mother, watching the man who had ordered me to kneel before his family.
Mom looked through the glass, her eyes clear and unburdened by fear.
“I feel sorry for him, Elena,” Mom whispered softly, resting her hand on my arm. “He traded a real family for greed.”
“Don't feel sorry for him, Mom,” I replied gently. “He chose every single step of this road.”

I turned to Claire. “Execute the final dissolution decree. I want his name stripped from every asset by Friday.”
